Summer 2012 - 'Folklife Dancers' (treated photograph)

I've long forgotten which country these dancers were from. I snapped this pic on my 2010 summer solstice walkabout.

Paintings: 2001-present : field abstracts with “artificial negative space”

The field abstract series are done from photographs. A rough sketch is made on paper, then marked up in a random manner using t-squares, curved rulers, and an Ames lettering guide (anyone remember those?) to create lines from which the artificial negative space “fields” are constructed. A final sketch is then made, and transferred to canvas. With an expanding knowledge of colour theory, I find that choosing a limited palette proves the most important part of the process. Lately, I’ve started using a computer to treat and enhance my photographs before sketching. This allows me to create finer and more intricate field patterns. Recently, I’ve been experimenting with less traditional mediums. If any of those prove to be useful, I’ll post them here.
